Get Involved with the Abingdon Civic Society

You can read more about our activities elsewhere on this site. Here are examples of the ways in which, as a member, you can get involved: as you can see, you don’t necessarily need to take on a major commitment, you can just offer help with individual tasks that suit your interests and skills.

Heritage Weekend

  • Brainstorming ideas, planning, researching/gathering information
  • Liaising with participating venues and groups
  • Designing publicity materials
  • Delivering leaflets and posters
  • Practical help on the day(s)

Unit 24

  • Managing bookings, briefing users, acting as keyholder
  • “Housekeeping” – tidying, occasional cleaning up, replenishing cleaning materials etc
  • D-i-Y type tasks

Walks

  • Organising May and September guided walks programmes (we have some regular routes and leaders so it is just a case of booking them up)
  • Producing and distributing publicity for walks events
  • Helping booking people in on the day at the Market Place
  • Managing supplies of our popular walks leaflets and replenishing as necessary
  • Leading walks (small groups)

Schools and young people

  • We don’t have an established programme in this area, but have recently made some useful contacts and done some preliminary work and would like to build on it.

Planning

  • Monitoring planning applications, flagging up any of concern and agreeing response with Committee members.
  • Helping to formulate FoA response to consultations such as Local and Neighbourhood Plan.
  • Helping with Conservation Area monitoring and appraisals

Website and Social Media

  • This website could do with a refresh and the webmaster would like to hand it on to someone with more up-to-date skills.
  • We also have two other websites for specific projects which need to be reviewed and possibly moved.
  • We have a Facebook page but it could do with a fresh approach.
  • Should we be on any other social media?

If you would like to know more about any of this please email chair@abingdoncivicsociety.org.uk , preferably with a phone number so we can call you for a chat.
